Youth Expedition Project - Dispense A Dream
NUS Pharmaceutical Society
6 - 23 December 2010
Well, this trip was special to me for many reasons. It was the first time I went overseas without my family, the first time I spent my birthday out of Singapore, and my very first trip as a volunteer. Visiting a country as a tourist only lets you see one side of it. Staying in one for an extended period of time however--especially in "non-touristy areas"--really gives you the chance to embrace their culture and their lifestyle. My journey in Cambodia is therefore likely to differ greatly from what most tourists usually experience. If you intend to visit as a tourist, stay tuned for my posts on my R&R experiences. The posts leading up to it however, are meant to shed light on: (1) my experiences as a volunteer living in another country, and (2) my experiences with friends as part of an school / organizational trip Part I: Arrival in Phnom Penh and Departure for Prey Veng Part of the allure to travelling for me comes in the actual journey itself. Especially plane flights. I find overland train journeys extremely exciting as well... hopefully in the future I'll get to live that experience :)
Chim Reap Su! ("Welcome" in Khmer)
We landed in Phnom Penh, capital and largest city of Cambodia, in the evening after a really short flight.
It's a really small and cosy airport.
Hilarity ensued when we realized that our logistic boxes were all broken on arrival. Basically we packed a lot of food and other items for our stay in the rural outskirts of Prey Veng. I was a part of the logistics team that put these boxes together and we spent ages trying to tape / seal / cushion all our items into our boxes. But they still came out like this? Miraculously, nothing seemed to be missing... or maybe we just didn't even know whether a few cans of food fell out without us noticing.
Making our way to our guesthouse, and then it's off for dinner!
So we had dinner at this place. I have no idea where it is; neither can I read Khmer. But that's the thrill of visiting a country and eating whatever you feel like eating.
Crossing roads: now this was a real challenge to us silly Singaporeans.
There are absolutely no traffic lights for most roads, even in a large capital like Phnom Penh. The key to crossing? Just be brave and go. If you hesitate, nobody's going to stop for you. Following locals help too :)
Dinner was... interesting. I can't remember how we ordered our food, actually.
Now I'm not very adventurous when it comes to food, so I considered this decent fare. To me, their soup felt like a non-spicy version of Tom Yum. I don't take spicy food and have never tried Tom Yum, so it was rather new to me.
We went back to our guesthouse after dinner and had a good rest before leaving early the next morning for the long ride to Prev Veng!
Leroy looking like a traveller straight of Lonely Planet
We had a quick stopover at a supermarket for some groceries that we were going to miss out in rural Prev Veng... such as a nice cold bottle of milk.
It's really fascinating to watch the scene move from an urbanized city landscape to rural, open fields.
And here my friends found a creative way to blast our music out loud for the entire bus to hear
Beautiful architecture
After a long ride, we were finally in Prey Veng and settled into the building that we would call home for the next 2 weeks :) In my next post, I'll be sharing with you my experiences in Prey Veng with Operation Hope Foundation!
