Cambodia Part III - Travellers' Diarrhea, Soap Distribution and Hope Village Prey Veng

Cambodia is a beautiful place, isn't it?

Traveller's Diarrhea.
One of the "highlights" of the trip had to be how everyone came down with travellers' diarrhea.

For the uninitiated, travellers' diarrhea usually affects people travelling from resource-rich to resource-poor regions of the world. It can be accompanied by fever, nausea, vomitting, abdominal pain or cramps, or blood in stool. They are usually caused by bacteria, but can also be due to viruses or parasitic organisms found in food and water. (Uptodate.com)

Well, we tried to avoid this as much as we could by not buying meat from the Prey Veng market (if you can recall this). We only bought staples such as rice, vegetables, and fruits from the market for our self-cooked meals, and we figured we would be fine.

I think we made the mistake when it came to washing our utensils with our tap water hahaha.

Cambodia Part II: Life in Hope Training Center, Prey Veng

Life in Prey Veng was very simple and unhurried. It's a kind of feeling you can never ever get in Singapore. Transportation is ancient, there is no Internet, there is no TV, and there is no hot water.

Things get very quiet once the skies grow dark. Everyone here rises early, and sleeps early. We're lucky that we never ran out of electricity, unlike the batch of Pharmers before us who went in the year before to work with Operation Hope Foundation. There were plenty of horror stories of the lights going out while people were showering, leaving them calling for their friends to hold up torch lights for them while they bathed, haha!

Being smack out in the rural open area, there are no other buildings around, leaving the skies dark for some awesome viewing of stars every night.

Strangely though, we could always hear club-like music in the middle of the night from a faraway distance... Looks like the Cambodian people know how to party. We're nowhere near the main town of Prev Veng, so it's still a mystery that can't be solved :)

Hope Training Centre was our home, and our main mission was to build a house for a family whose children were being educated at Hope Village. We also conducted lessons at Hope Village and made soap for distribution at villages in Prey Veng.

Youth Expedition Project - Dispense A Dream
NUS Pharmaceutical Society
6 - 23 December 2010

Well, this trip was special to me for many reasons. It was the first time I went overseas without my family, the first time I spent my birthday out of Singapore, and my very first trip as a volunteer.

Visiting a country as a tourist only lets you see one side of it. Staying in one for an extended period of time however--especially in "non-touristy areas"--really gives you the chance to embrace their culture and their lifestyle.

My journey in Cambodia is therefore likely to differ greatly from what most tourists usually experience. If you intend to visit as a tourist, stay tuned for my posts on my R&R experiences. The posts leading up to it however, are meant to shed light on:
(1) my experiences as a volunteer living in another country, and
(2) my experiences with friends as part of an school / organizational trip

"Like all great travellers, I have seen more than I remember
And remember more than I have seen"
-- Benjamin Disraeli

So I originally made the move to tumblr thinking that it would be easier to blog there...

But no.
In the end, tumblr is very much for microblogging and image spam after all.

After attempting to set up a WordPress blog and feeling thoroughly turned off by how I wouldn't be able to customize my layout without having to pay $$$, I've decided that it's time to come back here and wipe off the dust.

I've travelled a fair bit recently, and with my grad trip coming up next, I suppose it's time I actually make some effort in blogging about my trips. As I eventually move towards my goal of visiting extraordinary / lesser-known places in the world, I also hope to turn this blog into a reference for friends and strangers who may be keen to follow me in my path.

So yes! Starting tomorrow, I'll be recapping my journeys in the past two years. And I hope that I'll have the patience to keep on blogging for the rest of them to come! :)
